Following are brief bios of our principals. They have attained a high degree of expertise by training, certifications, publishing in the literature, and also by working in their relevant fields.



Mir Mohammed Assadullah, PhD, PMP, CSM

Dr. Assadullah holds an MS from New York University in Computer Science and a PhD in Computational Sciences and Informatics from George Mason University. He is also a Project Management Professional (PMP) by Project Management Institute (PMI) and a Certified Scrum Master (CSM) from Scrum Alliance.

Dr. Assadullah has more than twenty five years of experience in the Information Technology industry. He has held various leadership roles such as Technical Manager, Project Manager, and Sr. Computer Scientist. He enjoys teaching and has taught advanced Computer Science topics to graduate students at local universities.

Dr. Assadullah combines his teaching experience with his project management experience to bring an engaging learning experience for the course participants. He relies on participants sharing their past experience with the class to enrich the environment and foster an environment of team learning.

Kirk Borne, PhD

Dr. Borne received his PhD from California Institute of Technology in Astronomy. For more than thirty years, he has studied the evolution of galaxies and their simulation. Since 2000, he has developed & applied data mining & data science techniques on large astronomy data collections & sky survey databases, earth science remote sensing data collections, and more. He is investigating new and existing algorithms for the discovery of patterns, correlations, associations, and outliers (surprises) within highly dimensional parameter spaces. He has taught Data Mining at University of Maryland University College and is also a professor of Astrophysics and Computational Science at George Mason University.

Dr. Borne is interested in performing data mining on data of astronomical proportions. He has received numerous awards and recognitions and has published extensively in scholarly literature.

James Burgess, JD, MPH

Mr. Burgess is a veteran compliance and information privacy and security professional with several years of Project Management experience both evaluating and implementing programs which identify deficiencies, waste, and integrate efficiencies within departmental operations. He has led a variety of integration and business process re-engineering projects for both governmental (State and Federal), as well as corporate (Not-For-Profit and For Profit) entities.

He is well-versed in HIPAA Privacy and Security (Fifteen(15) years experience). He is knowledgeable in the provisions of Sarbanes-Oxley, the Privacy Act, FOIA, GLB, Patriot Act, EMTALA, FERPA, and the False Claims Act as they apply to the protection of Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and/or Protected Health Information (PHI).

Previously. Burgess served as Subject Matter Expert for a large federal Managed Care System and provided guidance on issues involving HIPAA Privacy and Security auditing, risk management, and overall compliance. Also, Mr. Burgess has served as one (1) of two (2) HIPAA Security Compliance Reviewers charged with maintaining the federal government's enforcement of the HIPAA Security Rule, via the investigation of HIPAA Security breaches, and performing random reviews/audits for HHS CMS. Office of E-Health Standards (the agency charged with federal HIPAA Security enforcement). In this role, Mr. Burgess also developed Corrective Action Plans (CAP) for non-compliant Covered Entities (CE), evaluated the remedial actions taken in consideration of an imposed CAP by CE's, and provided advice and consent as a Subject Matter Expert (SME).

Additionally, Mr. Burgess served (six year plus years) as the primary HIPAA Privacy and Security Subject Matter Expert for a not for profit managed care accreditation organization. In this role, Mr. Burgess regularly audits, evaluates, and offers remedial services to a multitude of national and international health service organizations seeking HIPAA Privacy and Security Accreditation. Mr. Burgess has performed over one hundred privacy and/or security audits. Further, he is one of a handful of Information Privacy and Security experts that have audited/reviewed the US Department of Health and Human Services, several states, not for profit as well as large corporate organizations.

In addition, Mr. Burgess is also abreast of information systems regulatory guidelines such as those developed by NIST and NASCO. Mr. Burgess holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Management (Finance) from Virginia Commonwealth University, a Master of Public Health from Columbia University, and a Juris Doctorate from the University Of Illinois College Of Law.

Umbrine Fatima, MD, PMP, CPHIMS, ITIL

Dr. Fatima completed her residency at New York Hospital, Medical Center of Queens, affiliated with Cornell Medical University. She is a Diplomat member of the American Board of Internal Medicine, a Licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada, a Project Management Professional (PMP) by Project Management Institute (PMI), a Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS), and a Clinician Consultant Health Information Technology Professional by American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

Dr. Fatima practiced medicine in a clinical setting for a number of years before teaching medicine and then taking on project management roles. She has held leading project management positions in deployment of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems and development of Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems.

Dr. Fatima is an expert in medical profession, corporate training, and managing Information Technology projects in healthcare industry. She brings a wealth of diverse experience and creates an engaging environment in her class.

Mohammed Fennich, Ph.D., PMP, ITIL

Dr. Fennich holds an MS degree in Electrical Engineering from California State University and a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering with focus on Information Systems and Management of Technology from Arizona State University. He is certified as a Project Management Professional (PMP) by the Project Management Institute (PMI). He is also ITIL certified.

Dr. Fennich worked and consulted at large companies such as Intel and CISCO and also consulted at smaller, start-up companies. He brings more than 17 years of hand-on experience and a wealth of knowledge in the areas of IT and business, strategies, operations, and execution. His focus is the management of Business Intelligence programs, Customer Relationship Management (CRM) initiatives and Technology roadmaps and deployments.

Dr. Fennich is an active PMI member. He is a strong advocate of structured project management and a supporter, and practitioner of agile methodologies. Throughout his career in the corporate world, Dr. Fennich has taught numerous classes based on PMBOK, CMMI and ITIL guidelines.

Lia C. Gerken, PhD, CPRW

Dr. Gerken holds a Master of Education degree from Regent University, a Master of Church Music from Concordia University, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Liturgical Studies from Drew University. She has over fifteen years of educational involvement in private institutions, and she has written and reviewed hundreds of résumés both as a professional résumé writer and as an employer and program director.

Drawing on her creative background, Dr. Gerken combines experience in teaching, editing, researching, and writing to provide résumés specifically tailored to meet individual needs. She is a Certified Professional Resume Writer (CPRW), a member of the Professional Association of Résumé Writers and Career Coaches (PARW/CC), and enjoys helping clients design unique résumés that stand out among the competition.

Stephen W. Volz, DBA, PMP, CMQ/OE, BSP

Dr. Volz holds a Doctor of Business Administration degree from the University of Phoenix and an MBA from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is a Project Management Professional (PMP) by Project Management Institute (PMI), a Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE) by the American Society for Quality, and a Balanced Scorecard Professional (BSP) through the Balanced Scorecard Institute.

Dr. Volz has over 25 years of business experience in organizational improvement methodologies. He is an internal strategic consultant for a major health insurance company and teaches online graduate courses in project management for Colorado Technical University as an assistant adjunct professor. Dr. Volz has taught courses in the corporate environment on topics such as corporate strategy, project management tools, performance improvement, and quality management. Currently, he serves as the Vice President of Education for a local PMI chapter.

Michael Wharton, MVP, MBA, PMP, MCT, MCTS, MCITP, MCSD, MCSE+I, MCDBA

Mr. Wharton is a Project/SharePoint Consultant and Trainer. His career started as a software developer before moving into project management. His passion to improve project management processes begin in 2003 using tools like project professional and server. Since then he has trained hundreds of project managers and implemented project server in over twenty-five PMOs. He has passed over forty Microsoft certification exams giving him a solid technical background with Project and SharePoint Server.

Mr. Wharton is active in the community. He is the past President-Elect and past Director of Programs for the NC Piedmont PMI, board member of the Triad SQL Server User Group, Triad Developers Guild and Enterprise Architect Roundtable. He is currently writing a book about implementing Portfolio Management using Project Server 2013.
